The European Steam Preservation Society (ESPS), based at Wansford, was founded with the ambition to purchase, restore, and operate historic Continental steam power. Our core mission is centred around Danish F Class no. 654 at the Nene Valley Railway—educating and inspiring future generations while demonstrating authentic Continental steam practices right here in the UK.
The journey of Danish F Class no. 654
Locomotive no. 654 is an exceptional engine perfectly suited to services on the Nene Valley Railway. Economical to maintain and operate, it represents the first Continental locomotive to arrive at the NVR in many years. Once delivered, no. 654 will become one of only two locomotives of its type in the entire United Kingdom, reuniting with its sister engine no. 656 for the first time in over five decades.

Our society is powered by skilled railway craftspeople, engineers, and passionate advocates. The leadership team includes Nathan Wilson (chairman, boilersmith, locomotive fitter, and driver), Lewis Morrissey (vice-chairman, engineer, and driver), Paul Ward (treasurer, engineer, and fireman), Sarah Mann (secretary, fundraiser, and grants coordinator), and Chloe Morrissey (social media and fundraising). Together, they bring extensive practical railway knowledge and relentless enthusiasm to the project.
